Des bouquets de roses

Dear Friend,

Sophie invited Mathilda to spend the weekend at her place. On Saturday, they participate in a day in the great outdoors. It was organized by Xavier, Sophie’s older brother, a very dignified and responsible young man with solid convictions. He is also engaged to Colombe, one of Mathilda’s cousins. A large group is participating in this activity, almost all the young people in the Work.

branche-aquarelleThey are to gather at 10 o’clock. There is joy, enthusiasm and good humour in the air. This is the first time Mathilda participates in this kind of activity with other young people from the Work, and she was really looking forward to it. Even if the two friends are among the younger participants, they quickly integrate the group and hike along the trails with a few of the boys and girls they know.

At noon, there is a well-deserved break. After having eaten their lunch next to a clear stream, Xavier gives instructions to the group and then suggests that, before going back on the trail, they say a rosary together in this magnificent and peaceful natural setting.

A rosary? Oh well! Mathilda really didn’t expect that, in the middle of a day of fun activities among young people, they would say a rosary! At home, when it is time for family prayer, it happens that she sighs, rolls her eyes heavenward in annoyance, or she tries to get out of it by using as an excuse that she has to do this or that. Strangely enough, on this lovely afternoon outdoors, no one in this group of young people seems to be put out by this suggestion. Is it really possible that these interesting adolescents, full of fun, enthusiastic, enjoying sports, good-looking, kind, and pleasant company would willingly recite their rosary in this way?

The rosary is a very important prayer, but we must admit that it is not the most common activity in our society. And even less among the young people! We all know this very well. Perhaps you are the only one, among your school mates, who prays the rosary. And so? Let us try to forget this difference for a little while, as we take the time to reflect.

Bouquet de roses-aquarelleMary is our Mother. She opens her Heart to us to receive our confidences, our hopes and our desires. Isn’t it natural to greet our mother every day and to tell her we love her? So, it should be the same with Mary. That is what the rosary is, expressing our love to, our confidence in and our admiration for her.

Therefore, we must learn to consider the rosary in a positive way, because its recitation can only bring us good things in every way. Besides, it has been scientifically proven that the repetition of the “Hail Marys” of the rosary can have the effect of producing physical and psychological relaxation. (Of course, this is not the case if, during family prayer, you reply in such a way that your parents can feel your annoyance!)

When Marie-Paule was tired, she would sometimes stop and recite a rosary, and she would then regain new strength to carry on with her task. Spiritually, the rosary also has a great effectiveness. The rosary is “like a dike capable of holding back the powers of evil rolling over the earth,” Marie-Paule wrote. (Le Royaume, no. 79, March-April 1991, p. 19)

As a Knight of Mary, the rosary makes all of us participants in the spiritual battle of good over evil. Can Mary count on you? Marie-Paule also said that “the rosary is an opening onto Heaven.” (White Book IV, p. 24)

Every “Ave” we recite goes off into the Hereafter, creating an opening from which a beautiful Marian light bursts forth and surrounds our soul. Mathilda quickly realized that the recitation of the rosary with the other young people was not at all tiresome. Moreover, the fact that everyone willingly participated in it made her stop and think.

A few weeks later, she decided to integrate more prayer time in her days. So, she asked her father if she could use the old MP3 they have at home, downloaded the rosary on it and put a single-decade rosary in her pocket. From now on, during her daily trips on the bus or as she walks, she will offer up bouquets of “roses” to Mary. This will be a bit of time spent with the Mother of God during which the chain of the rosary will consolidate more and more the bond uniting her heart with Mary’s.

We hope that you too will reach the point of liking the rosary and experiencing the vital need for prayer in your everyday life.
