Des grâces bien spéciales

Dear Friend,

Someone is in the confessional. Mathilda is waiting her turn, a little anxious and nervous. It’s never very pleasant to tell one’s “stupidities” to a priest, especially when we are really ashamed of ourselves. Fortunately, Mathilda is in the habit of going to confession and she tries to do so regularly which makes things easier. This time, an incident keeps coming back to her mind, as though her conscience were incessantly reminding her of it.

Well yes, since the incident when her cousin Nancy reproached her for her comments about her mother, Mathilda has become more aware of all the times she has not been too nice with her or when she didn’t reply very kindly to her. Even if Mathilda doesn’t always want to hear her mother’s words of advice, her opinions or her remarks, and she sometimes has the impression that her mother doesn’t understand her, she now realizes, after the incident with Nancy, that her attitude was really not right when she openly discredited her mother before the girls at school in order to look “cool”.

Very conscious that she acted badly, tormented by this unfortunate incident which she regrets, she cannot then ignore her fault and not confess it. This is embarrassing, but she may as well honestly admit what she did, without sugar-coating it. So she will accuse herself of having lacked respect towards her mother and of having discredited her in front of her friends.

How hard it is, at times, to be good! Have you not already noticed, as Saint Paul said and as we can see with Mathilda’s actions, that you do not always do the good you would like to do, but instead commit the wrong you would not want to do? The human being is weak and frail and he must constantly fight against the evil in him, convert again or change his ways every day.

No one is perfect, but God has given us an extraordinary means of advancing towards Him and progressing spiritually in spite of our weaknesses, and that is confession.

Personally getting into the habit of confessing one’s sins to a priest regulary every two weeks or every month, for example, shows our desire to change and become better so as to grow in the spiritual life. Of course, if we commit a serious sin against God’s laws, which cuts us off from the Quinternity and from the others, then confession becomes an urgent necessity in order to regain the state of grace. In that case, we must never delay in having recourse to it.

Confession is so grand! Through it, God reveals to us all His tenderness, His kindness and His love. He knows that we are weak and He gives us everything so that we may be able to draw closer to Him in this great adventure of holiness. Yes, He is truly the one receiving us and whom we meet in the confessional.

Marie-Paule wrote on this subject: “Whether a soul be in the depths of wretchedness, or very close to God, the sacrament of Penance brings very special graces…. Confession is not just the avowal of faults; it is also the dispensing of precious counselling given under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit; it is precise direction for a soul; it is the peace that flows from this.” (Life of Love III, chap. 41, p. 291)

After having listened to her confession, the priest said to Mathilda that her cousin Nancy’s intervention opened her eyes concerning what she was doing. Without this, Mathilda might have gotten into the habit of being openly opposed to her parents. By allowing rebellion and disobedience to fill her heart, she would have sunk more and more into a most dangerous crisis. So, what a good influence Nancy had on her!

The priest also reassured her that, by means of this wonderful sacrament, her soul was cleansed of the grey stain which her lack of respect had left on it. Then he encouraged her to thank God every day for her good parents, and to ask Marie-Paule to enlighten them in their parental responsibilities. Finally, he reminded her of the importance of obedience.

Now, after this confession, Mathilda felt so relieved and happy. That is because the priest also has the power to soothe consciences and Mathilda has felt the effects of peace and joy flowing from this. A real liberation! Truly, what a blessing! It was an unfortunate and humiliating incident, but the step she took was a source of very special graces for her.

And since she doesn’t like the thought of causing sorrow to Marie-Paule, to the Quinternity, to her parents or others, she needs the sacrament of Reconciliation, even if, sometimes, she finds it painful. And now, she starts afresh once again, determined to do better.

And you, what importance does confession have for you?
Do you think of it as a grace in your life?
