A World to Be Rebuilt
Dear Members of the Lady’s Work, Dear Friends,
How long is the road leading to victory and how full of pitfalls it is! Only a few weeks ago, I wrote you a long letter entitled “Such Is Reality”, with the thought that it would put an end, if possible, to the rumours and the diverse questionings concerning sexual abuses committed in the past within the Army of Mary and of the abuses of power which have been going on until more recently. Then, as it was to be expected, certain media discovered this information and completed it with other input from at least one malevolent source, which rapidly led to a few articles, interviews and news reports partly inaccurate.
Further to this first letter (published in the review and made accessible on Internet) and besides a few painful testimonials, I received numerous letters and messages expressing thanks, encouragement… and relief. For, after the trial, we would finally be able to look beyond the old weightiness and, now much lighter, energetically thrust ourselves toward the wonderful future foretold.
*
In the aforementioned text, I purposely chose to give priority to the victims – to speak to the victims – because they seemed to me to be the ones most often forgotten in all the comments heard and the regrets expressed. Besides, that is still often the case. That is why, in the area of sexual abuses, I challenge and disavow any and all interventions, interviews or homilies, any word and writing coming from any member of the Work whomsoever, in which there would not be the sincere expression of the concern we should all have for the victims (known or unknown).
The understanding of what the victims went through during their childhood or adolescence must be deeply established within us, as well as a complete disavowal of the acts they had to endure, a real compassion for their sufferings, whether these latter belong to the past or carry on, more often than we might think, into the present in spite of the decades that may have gone by. Do we really have any idea of what that suffering is which still makes one moan or weep thirty or forty years later? Some people can get over such situations, but others cannot. In the cases of the pedophilia referred to, the persons marked by them can be husbands, fathers, brothers or friends.
*
For the rest, it is necessary to put things into perspective. There is, first of all, the recourse to the justice of men. As imperfect as it might be, it is often necessary to have recourse to it; it does not only exist to punish the guilty but also to protect the innocent. On the other hand, we have to admit that the Catholic Church has long thought itself to be above the justice and laws of men and that it even established its own rules in this regard, to the point of having created a sort sense of impunity among certain members of the clergy. The bishop would send the priest or religious who was a pedophile into another group, to another parish, the plaintiffs went home and all was said and done…
No, all was not said and done! We all know that. This is how it was done thirty or forty years ago, for that is how society found it acceptable to act then, but this is no longer the case. Our world has many faults, but it has also evolved positively in certain areas. The witness of victims is ignored less and less, and the guilty ones can no longer avoid the necessary justice as easily. The fact remains though that a monetary compensation, regardless of how high it might be, sends the deplorable message to society that money prevails over everything else and that a grave moral error can be redeemed with a simple bank transfer. Of course, when an abuser has been found guilty, we could think that this will put a balm on the abused person’s heart, give him the feeling that society has acknowledged the evil he underwent and as a consequence that justice has been meted out, but I seriously doubt that this can resolve his painful, deep-seated emotional problems because this does not in any way lessen the memory of what he experienced.

Preaching mercy and forgiveness is very good and it is even the only real path of liberation for the victims. But do we really realize that when we speak in those terms, we are not asking the abuser but the abused person to make an effort, and sometimes a very big effort? It is true that this can bring him calm and serenity, but, even more than the abuser, he will also often need to receive spiritual or psychological support or counselling or appropriate treatment. So, we must not simply limit ourselves to that.
In fact, in her words and her writings, Marie-Paule went beyond that first level in order to look even further. Since it is not possible to change the past, so that we have to “live with it”, and since there is no other way of healing than through forgiveness, as difficult as this might be, this is the advice that must be given. But over and above forgiveness, there is faith and love, for religion can be a great help in such a situation. For anyone who has recourse to Heaven, it is possible to receive from it strength and assistance. The outside world will not understand that, but for anyone who believes in the Lady, he knows this is true.

It is also necessary that the way every human being considers himself and considers every other human being changes. This is a world to be rebuilt. It is necessary that every person (man, woman and child) be seen as an inviolable sanctuary, a sacred entity for himself and because of the divine presence in him. Jesus said: “Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Mt 25, 40) The road humanity still has to travel is enormous, really enormous, and regardless of the major event that must still happen in order to hasten the full coming of the Kingdom, the Earth will not be peopled with holy men and women overnight…
We will all have to work at improving the rules and the laws, the attitudes and the behaviors, the ideas and the concepts, and especially the principles of education. The spiritual alone cannot save the world. That is what we must start with, but once it is lived well within a person or a group, stabilized and has matured in a way, then it must “overflow” into the temporal in one way or another and promote a society that is safer and more just for all men. No religion has ever established itself on a large scale without any temporal institutions that draw their inspiration from it and support it. When, in her messages at Amsterdam, the Lady of All Peoples spoke of Justice and Equity, She was not referring to the spiritual but to the blessed effects for humanity that this must have on society.
May the Kingdom establish itself increasingly, so that it may organize the entire Earth a little more every day!

ANNEX
The above letter having barely been written, I happened to talk with an old friend who, sadly, was himself the victim of a pedophile during his childhood. As he was talking to me about my letter of last March 25 which was published in the review, I suddenly thought that I had an opportunity here to get to know a victim’s reaction to my new letter. He seemed happy to be able to read it, and – surprise – he sent me his appreciation in the course of the evening. It is rare that a victim of such acts expresses himself and it is good to know how at least one person is living the present situation created by the media after my first letter. – MB
Dear Marc,
Sincere thanks for having sent me your wonderful letter filled with empathy, understanding and hope. This deeply touched me. We feel in it an enlightened and balanced judgment; I would even say a divine Light. If I may do so, I will give you my humble opinion after the publication of your article “Such Is Reality”, of the series of articles printed in the media and of your last letter which I have just read.
For me, the review Le Royaume of May-June opened a path of liberation. After so many years of silence and suffering, I heaved a sigh of relief. Finally, the veracity of the events that occurred was being acknowledged publicly and I was receiving, besides, a request for forgiveness which I felt was authentic, in your name and in the name of the current Officers of the Work!
Unfortunately, a few weeks later, what our ears heard in the recent wave of media reports destroyed the peace felt because, in them, one seemed to practically ignore the victims of sexual abuses. The “breath of fresh air” I had taken was quickly smothered… For me, it was incomprehension, inconsistency, soul-searching. It seemed to me that the message was entirely different and I saw that the comments around me (from the young and not so young) went along the same lines. The message in your article was not present in the interventions passed on by the media. So, I am well placed to say that the persons who suffered the same lot as I did are most certainly shaken at this time.
However, the reading of the present letter, “A World to Be Rebuilt”, has calmed everything. From the very beginning, we feel the same sincerity and the same attitudes as in your first letter. You focus on what is essential in this painful situation: the victims. Can one really understand that a suffering still makes one cry after more than 40 years, even after having forgiven? It is important to respect each person’s journey. And with time, help and support, we can really attain Marie-Paule’s message of forgiveness and mercy.
In short, you cover all the points, both on the temporal and the spiritual levels. It is direct, concise and profound. The road to victory is perhaps long, but I encourage you to publish this text “A World to Be Rebuilt”. The message you bring will enable many people to “rebuild themselves” and regain peace in their hearts. It is also important for our young people to read what you write and to understand your thinking, which is certainly different from the one of the world in which they live.
With a heartfelt THANK-YOU!
A victim calmed by your writings.
